ברוך אתה יי אלהינו מלך העולם אשר קדשנו במצותיו וצונו לרדוף צדק

We praise You, Eternal God, Sovereign of the universe, who calls us to holiness through mitzvot, commanding us to pursue tzedek/justice.

Social Action

The mission of Congregation B’nai Tikvah’s Social Action Committee is to foster within our synagogue the desire to heal the world.  We do this through direct action helping individuals and institutions who are in need; bringing programs and events to our community that inform and enlighten about Jewish principles of tzedakah; and advocating locally and nationally for laws that promote and encourage social justice.

Hunger and Homelessness

Through our partnerships with local nonprofits serving the Monument Corridor, we have been able to donate funds, food, clothing, backpacks  and supplies to our neighbors less fortunate than us.  We have hosted a number of events to raise awareness of the issues of homelessness and food insecurity to our religious school students and congregants.  Our faith based partnerships with the local non profits have forged long lasting relationships with the organization’s leadership and other religious institutions.

Greening Our Synagogue

Solar panels were just the beginning! Congregation B’nai Tikvah’s environmental initiatives have included:

  • Generating energy onsite
  • Rigorous separation of recyclables and compostables from trash
  • Use of recycled paper office products
  • Use of compostable tableware
  • Environmental curriculum in the religious school

Immigrant Rights, Refugee Support

We are part of a sanctuary network of dozens of churches and synagogues advocating  for people threatened by deportation. We organize teams to support and accompany people who have to attend frightening immigration hearings or begin their life as newcomers to this country.

Defense of Women’s Health

Our active members have worked tirelessly by supporting pathways for women to receive critical medical services and health education: signing petitions, attending rallies, contacting elected representatives, and donating their time and funds.

Community In Action

We march, we sign petitions, we sing, we call our legislators while proudly carrying our CBT banner.

Advocacy

Our committee leads our congregation in a collective effort to engage with issues of local, national and global concern.

The ancient command “Tzedek, Tzedek Tirdof! Justice, justice shall you seek!” guides our path of advocacy.
