Cantor Jennie Chabon, a Berkeley native, graduated from Columbia University with a degree in Anthropology and received her Masters of Sacred Music and Investiture from the Jewish Theological Seminary. While in cantorial school she served as the cantor of Shomrei Emunah in Montclair, New Jersey. She joined the clergy team at B’nai Tikvah in 2004.
Cantor Chabon developed her love of music early, playing the violin and singing in the San Francisco Girls Chorus, recording, touring and competing internationally in choral festivals and competitions. She found her path to the cantorate and her passion for Yiddishkeit when she was living in Israel for two years after college graduation. While in cantorial school, she discovered a deep love of liturgy and the desire to make prayer accessible to all.
Cantor Chabon has worked with children in many different capacities – teaching both kindergarten and Hebrew school, and most importantly, as a counselor and program director at Camp Kee Tov in Berkeley, where she made many lifelong friends and met her husband, Steve. Since coming to B’nai Tikvah, she has recorded two albums of Shabbat music with her band, Shir Joy, and given birth to three beautiful boys: Ezra, Levi and Judah. Cantor Chabon is an avid yoga practitioner and loves cooking, hiking, and spending time with her friends and family.
