Black Ships Before Troy brings young readers into the world of Homer’s Iliad: a world of proud warriors, jealous gods, terrible choices, and unforgettable glory. Rosemary Sutcliff’s powerful retelling follows the great story of the Trojan War, from the quarrel that sets the conflict in motion to the final destruction of Troy. Along the way, students will encounter Achilles, Hector, Odysseus, Paris, and other figures whose courage and flaws have fascinated readers for thousands of years. In this course, students will discuss a story that asks enduring questions: What makes a hero? How can pride lead even the greatest men to ruin? And why have stories of war, glory, grief, and fate lasted across the ages?
