This course will explore themes of courage, honor, and excellence in Judaism and Western thought and literature. We will use the speech of Eleazar ben Yair before the battle of Masada and the “Sword Day” speech from The Lord of the Rings to compare and contrast Jewish and Western accounts of courage. We will examine questions of self-sacrifice, heroism, and free will while consulting other key Jewish and Western texts to tease out some of the differences between these two traditions.
