Old Yeller is far more than a story about a boy and his dog. Set on the Texas frontier after the Civil War, Fred Gipson’s classic novel follows fourteen-year-old Travis Coates as he is forced to grow up quickly while his father is away on a cattle drive. When a rough, unwanted yellow dog appears at the family farm, Travis slowly discovers in Old Yeller a companion of rare courage, loyalty, and heart. In this course, students will discuss a story that asks big questions in simple language: What does it mean to become responsible? How do love and duty sometimes come into conflict? And why do stories of courage, sacrifice, and loss stay with us long after we finish reading?
