The Phantom Tollbooth turns boredom itself into the beginning of an adventure. Norton Juster’s beloved novel follows Milo, a listless boy who drives through a mysterious tollbooth into the Kingdom of Wisdom, a strange and marvelous land where words, numbers, logic, nonsense, and imagination come vividly to life. Joined by Tock the watchdog and the Humbug, Milo sets out to rescue the princesses Rhyme and Reason and restore order to a world that has lost its sense. In this course, students will discuss a story that asks wonderfully playful questions: Why does learning matter? What happens when words and numbers are separated from wisdom? And how can curiosity transform the way we see the world?
