Where the Red Fern Grows has moved generations of young readers with its unforgettable portrait of a boy and his beloved dogs. Wilson Rawls’s classic novel follows Billy Colman, a determined boy growing up in the Ozark Mountains, who works and saves for two years to buy the puppies he has long dreamed of owning. As Billy trains Old Dan and Little Ann, the three become an inseparable team, bound together by loyalty, courage, and love. In this course, students will discuss a story that asks big questions with great emotional force: What does it mean to persevere toward a dream? Why are the bonds between people and animals so powerful? And how can stories of hardship, sacrifice, and loss also leave us with beauty and hope?
