The Secret Garden is a story of locked doors, lonely children, and the hidden possibility of renewal. Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic novel follows Mary Lennox, a spoiled and unhappy orphan who is sent to live at a mysterious manor on the Yorkshire moors. As Mary discovers a neglected garden shut away from the world, she also begins to discover friendship, responsibility, and the possibility of change—not only in the garden, but in herself and those around her. In this course, students will discuss a story that asks quiet but powerful questions: How do people grow out of selfishness and loneliness? What does it mean to care for something beyond yourself? And why do nature, friendship, and hope have the power to bring deadened things back to life?
