Set in the brutal landscape of the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush, White Fang traces the life of a wolf-dog hybrid from birth in the wild to domestication among humans — essentially the mirror image of London’s own The Call of the Wild. Where that novel follows a domesticated dog reverting to instinct, this one follows a wild animal being remade by human contact, for worse and then for better.
White Fang’s early life is shaped almost entirely by cruelty: an unforgiving wilderness, then a brutal Indigenous camp, then a sadistic owner who turns him into a killing machine for dogfighting. London is unflinching about how thoroughly environment and treatment determine character here — the novel’s real argument is that White Fang’s viciousness isn’t innate, it’s manufactured, blow by blow, by everyone who’s had power over him. The turn comes with Weedon Scott, whose patience and consistency slowly earn something the beatings never could: loyalty, then affection.
