Join us for an in-person dinner in Tikvah’s New York City offices as we evaluate recent developments in religious liberty in the United States and the impact they will have on Jewish community and practice. What is the nature of free exercise of religion? Will recent rulings help or hinder Jewish practice? What should we expect from the Supreme Court moving forward?

This dinner will take place at the Tikvah Fund’s Headquarters on the 4th floor 165 E 56th St in New York City. All attendees must be registered prior to the event in order to be admitted.

Eric Baxter

Eric Baxter has served as senior counsel for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty since 2011. Since then he has represented religious organizations and individuals in a wide array of religious liberty disputes at both the trial and appellate level. His case victories include a Ninth Circuit ruling upholding the “Big Mountain Jesus” statue that has stood on Forest Service land near Kalispell, Montana, for more than sixty years (FFRF v. Weber), and a rare Pentagon decision allowing a Sikh soldier to maintain his full beard and turban while serving in the Army (Singh v. Carter). Eric has extensive experience fighting efforts under state Blaine amendments to exclude religious organizations and individuals from participating on equal terms in the public square. He also regularly advises religious institutions of higher education in defending their religious missions against government encroachment.

Howard Slugh

Howard Slugh is a founder and General Counsel of the Jewish Coalition for Religious Liberty. He is also an attorney in Washington, DC focusing on constitutional law. His writings have been published in National Review Online, The Weekly Standard, The Daily Wire, The Baltimore Sun, The Public Discourse, The American, American Thinker, and other media.

Tal Fortgang

Tal Fortgang is a law clerk on a federal court in Washington, DC. Since participating in a Tikvah high school fellowship over a decade ago he has remained active in Tikvah programming as a College Summer Honors (Beren) Fellow, a Krauthammer Fellow, a Legal Fellow, and an instructor for various Tikvah educational programs. Additionally, he has held fellowships at the Manhattan Institute, SAPIR, and the Jewish Coalition for Religious Liberty. He writes frequently on a variety of topics for Commentary, Law & Liberty, National Review, the Wall Street Journal, and many other publications. Tal earned an AB in Politics and certificate in Judaic Studies cum laude from Princeton University. He earned his JD from NYU Law, where he was Senior Notes Editor of the Journal of Law & Liberty, a Bradley Fellow, and research assistant for Professor Richard A. Epstein. After his clerkships he is slated to practice appellate and administrative law at a leading Philadelphia law firm.
